C-IDEA Conference 2024: CONNECTIONS

C-IDEA International Educator Association was founded in 2018. This association is an international non-profit organization dedicated to art and design education. To bring all art and design educators together to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange in research and practice. Until now, it has 147 members from 35 countries.

C-IDEA aims to bring together Art and Design practitioners and educators to foster collaboration, exchange knowledge, share research and celebrate practice. The 2024 C-IDEA Conference is open globally to all art and design practitioners, researchers, educators, art and design industry representatives, publishers, and galleries. C-IDEA embraces diversity and is open to contributions from all areas of Art and Design practice, research and education. We discussed and present educational issues, methods, ideas and discoveries, shared research outcomes and distribute knowledge about innovative modes of practice.

Conference Speech

Hosted by the Guilin University of Electronic Technology, Art and Design School, Guilin, China, the CIDEA Connections Conference was attended by over 500 students, staff and esteemed guests who are from 15 different countries and regions.

The C-IDEA Connections Conference opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Ye Dehui, Dean of the School of Art and Design. Nie Hui, Deputy Secretary of Guilin University of Electronic Technology delivered a speech, warmly welcoming all international guests who had travelled from all over the world. He also introduced the recent developments and achievements of Guilin University of Electronic Technology, highlighting the significant progress the University has made in the field of Design.

Nie Hui, Deputy Secretary of Guilin University of Electronic Technology, and C-IDEA Chairperson, David Blaiklock jointly unveiled the plaque for the Southern Region Governing Unit of C-IDEA – Guilin School of Art and Design.

Ten recognised international practitioners and educators from Poland (Sebastian Smit, Arek Marcinkowski), USA (Hyungjoo Kym), Iran (Mehdi Saeedi), Australia (David Blaiklock, Dan McLean), Taiwan/China (Chang Fang Pang), Singapore (Lisa Winstanley, Jesse John Thompson) and Spain (David Torrents) were invited to share their creative practice in design, art, research and education. Using innovative speech to type, translation software, presentations and subsequent questions to and from students/presenters ran seamlessly. Presentations covered many diverse topics relating to contemporary creative practice including Industrial Design, Visual Communication, Illustration, Sculpture, Design Expertise, Comics, Animation, Design for Social Good and Poster Design. It was an honour for all participants to attend the conference. The CIDEA organisers are sincerely grateful and humbled by the generosity of the Guilin University of Electronic Technology, Art and Design School, and for their exceptional hospitality and work in developing and presenting a world class event for the CIDEA CONNECTION Conference in Guilin, China. Thank you.

Panel Discussion

The panel discussion with all international speakers which focussed on poster design approaches and practices from various countries. In the evening CIDEA President David Blaiklock hosted the CIDEA Conference Panel Discussion, an online forum which focussed on the Future of Design Education in the face of AI technology. The International speakers were Christopher Scott (Iowa State University, USA), Daniel Meier (University of Applied Sciences. Germany), Dogan Arslan (Art and Architecture Faculty,Istanbul Medeniyet University, Turkey),  Carlos Gonzalez Manjarrez (Anahuac Queretaro University, Mexico), Lefteris Heretakis (Buckinghamshire New University, England), Pavel-Pisklakov (South Ural State University, Russia), Derwyn Goodall (George Brown College, Canada), Li Zhang (Purdue University, USA) and Emanuel Barbosa (ESAD College of Art and Design, Portugal).

Workshops

Students from the Guilin University of Electronic Technology, Art and Design School enrolled and attended a full day design workshop that explored specialised areas of creative practice from each of the International CIDEA presenters. Students were able to choose from design and art workshops such as, The ‘Visualisation project’: Cognitive Shock, The process of Designing Characters and Signs, Creative Algorithms: The Intersection of AI and Contemporary Art, The Sound of a Poster, Drawing out Your Fears, Self-Identity Typographic Cube, Poster Design Creation and International Design Award Research Office. A large body of student work was completed during the workshops. In a diverse and exceptional display, student design and art from each workshop was collated and displayed as an exhibition.

Exhibition

Held at the Art and Design School the Presenter’s Student Workshop exhibition opened in the morning, followed by a certificate ceremony and announcement of new CIDEA members, including the Guilin University of Electronic Technology. International guests, students and staff from Guilin University of Electronic Technology, Art and Design School, then visited 2024 C-IDEA Design Award Exhibition, International Art Education Achievement Exhibition of Teachers and Students 2024, the Beijing Opera Art International Poster Biennale and the Europe Theatre Posters exhibition at the Guangxi Normal University Press Art Museum.

Guilin City Tour

The International speakers and representatives from the Guilin University of Electronic Technology, Art and Design School explored and toured the Lijiang River which flows through the mountains of the Lijiang River National Park. The Lijiang River National Park is famous for its Fengcong karst limestone hills and breathtaking natural beauty which has inspired generations of artists. The day long river tour culminated with dinner and a cultural show at Guilin’s famous Romance Park.
