Course Title: Exploration of New Media Design Language
This course shows eight of Prof .Dr Li Xu’s personal poster designs, each created using different new media software. These works exemplify the innovative integration of technology and design, demonstrating the versatility and creative potential of various digital tools.
Course Description
This course aims to cultivate students’ ability to explore the diversity and forefront of poster design through innovative design thinking and technological tools. Students will learn to apply emerging digital tools, software, and technologies, mastering how to push the boundaries of traditional poster design and implement these skills in practical projects. The course covers areas such as digital design, interactive design, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), and data visualization, emphasizing the integration of technology and creativity while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. Through project-based learning, students will progressively master and innovate these design tools through hands-on practice.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Master cutting-edge poster design technologies: Understand and utilize the latest design tools and techniques, gaining proficiency in various state-of-the-art software and platforms.
2. Foster innovative thinking: Develop the ability to innovate within technical constraints, breaking traditional poster design frameworks to propose and implement bold and novel design concepts.
3. Explore diverse poster design formats: Experiment with various forms of poster expression using different technologies, such as animated posters, interactive posters, VR, AR, and more.
4. Enhance the integration of technology and creativity: Combine technical skills with creative vision to produce impactful and visually striking poster designs.
5. Develop interdisciplinary collaboration skills: Work on projects involving professionals from other fields (e.g., technology, programming, music, psychology) to effectively convey messages through design.
Case 1 (2D Poster):
2D poster design, using Adobe design software Photoshop to turn dance posters from sketches into digital graphic works.
Case 2 (3D Poster):
Use Rhino Design Software to transform dance posters from flat to three-dimensional.
Case 3 (Interactive Poster #1):
First, using Adobe AI design software to vectorize the dance poster. Then using Unity design software, so that the audience could touch the phone screen to make the poster interactive, move, and make sounds.
Case 4 (Dynamic Poster #1):
Use Cinema 4D (C4D) software to design and make the word “舞” dance.
Case 5 (Sound Visualization Poster):
Using Touchdesigner design software, you can use sound to control dance posters and create sound visualization poster effects.
Case 6 (Interactive Poster #2):
Using Touchdesigner design software and adding gesture sensors, people can control the movement of dance poster images through gestures.
Case 7 (Dynamic Poster #2 / Light projection Poster):
Using Madmapper design software, you can make the dance posters move, turn them into particle or fluid dynamic posters and project them onto building objects.
Case 8 (Application of AI Technology and Machine Learning in Poster Design):
Using AI firefly software, dance posters can generate various material effects according to the effects of school works.
